Scientific Research Terms
Scientific research, information technology, and their combination in scientific software, are fraught with technical terms and jargon. This glossary explains some of the common terms. Clcik below for a glossary of important terms from Accelrys .

Sequencing
The process of determining the relative order of nucleotides in a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) or RNA ( ribonucleic acid) molecule or the order of amino acids in a protein.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases
A large group of infections that can be spread via sexually contact. The most common in the United States are chlamydia, genital warts gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus, herpes, HIV, and syphilis.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms SNPs (pronounced ``snips'')
SNPs are minute genetic variations that occur  throughout human DNA. Their value as genetic markers resides in their simplicity, frequency, and relatively even distribution throughout the genome. Of the roughly 3 billion nucleotide pairs (i.e., the ``letters'') that make up the genetic code, it is estimated that a SNP -- a single letter variation in the code from one person to the next -- occurs every thousand or so nucleotide pairs.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery-Definitions
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a way of treating brain disorders with a precise delivery of a single high dose of radiation in a one-day session. Treatment involves the use of focused radiation beams delivered to a specific area of the brain to treat abnormalities, tumors or other functional disorders. Body stereotactic radiosurgery does not exist because there is no way to immobilize the body to treat a tumor in one session the way the head can be secured. Fractionated stereotactic radiation treatments - which are received over a period of days or weeks - may be administered in the body with the assistance of removable masks and frames that achieve some degree of lesser mobilization.

Subinvestigator
Any individual member of the clinical trial team designated as a subinvesitgator and supervised by the investigator at a trial site. They perform clinical trial related procedures and/or make important trial related decisions (e.g. associates, residents, research fellows).

Suppression File
The Suppression File requirement was part of the CAN SPAM Act of 2003,(link to the FTC). The purpose of the file is to ensure that email receipients that have opted-out of receiving any further emails from the sender do not receive any emails from that sender.

In compliance with the CAN SPAM Act of 2003, Publishers inserts a footer in all email messages to allow the email recipient to opt out of receiving future emails from sender.

Advertisers must also include a link or email address within their message that allows recipients to opt out of any of the advertiser’s future broadcasts.

Advertisers must supply a suppression file that includes all of their opt outs from previous broadcasts. Any of the opt outs contained on the advertiser’s suppression file that match to Publishers email addresses will be removed prior to transmission. If an advertiser does not have a suppression file, they must send an email stating that fact.

Surrogate Marker
A measurement of a drug's biologic activity that substitutes for a clinical endpoint such as death or pain relief.
