Gas Chromatography (GC)
A process by which the components of a mixture are separated from one another by volatilizing the sample into a carrier gas stream and passing the gas through a column containing a substance that selectively retains (absorbs) and releases the volatile constituents.

Gene
An ordered string of DNAnucleotides that we inherit from our parents. Each gene has a unique location on a particular chromosome and acts as the blueprint for producing a specific protein when needed by the body.

Gene Therapy
After the exact location of a specific DNA sequence on one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes is known, the goal of Gene Therapy is to replace an individuals damaged or missing gene. The result is a partially or completely restoration of the intended function. This is accomplished by transferring new DNA or a complete gene in to the afflicted individual.

Generic Drugs
When an company develops a new drug, it gives the drug two names. One is its generic name- the name of the chemical compound that makes up the drug. The other is the brand name, which is what the company decided to name the product.

If the drug is in fact new and unique the company will obtain a patent. The patent gives the company  exclusive and legal rights to manufacture and market the drug during the life of the patent, which is 20 years. Many drugs have several patents, which prolong the exclusivity period beyond 20 years.

Once the patent expires, the drug may be manufactured and sold by other companies under a different
brand name, or under its generic (chemical compound) name. All manufacturing and marketing of the
generic drug must be conducted in strict compliance with the guidelines established by the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA).

GMO's andTransportation (Genetically Modified Organisms)
The 41st Edition of the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations defines GMOs as microorganisms and organisms in which genetic material has been purposely altered through genetic engineering in a way that does not occur naturally.

How are they classified?
Under IATA 3.6.2.1.2 category:

(a), GMOs that meet the definition of an infectious substance, must be classified as Class 6.2 Dangerous Goods and assigned UN number 2814 or 2900.

(b) covers animals which contain or are contaminated with GMOs that meet the definition of infectious substance and must not be transported by air unless exempted under IATA 2.6.1 by the States concerned.

(c) covers GMOs that are known or suspected to be dangerous to humans, animals or the environment. These are also forbidden in the air unless exempted by the States concerned.

(d) are GMOs which do not meet the definition of infectious substance but which are capable of altering animals, plants or microbiological substances in a way which is not normally the result of natural reproduction must be classified in Class 9 and assigned to UN 3245.

(e) suggests that those samples which do not meet the definition of infectious substance and are not capable of altering animals, plants or microbiological substances in a way which is not normally the result of natural reproduction are not subject to the provisions of the regulations.
